In September, 2001 a small organisation China 8 was set up in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, China by an Australian catholic priest called John Wotherspoon to work with migrant worker families in Zhaoqing. In five years China 8 has grown from a simple gesture by John to help one migrant family to an organisation with five centres helping hundreds of people.
China8 helps migrant workers in the city of Zhaoqing:
- providing free education for school-less children
- assisting health care for poor families
- enabling the local community and new arrivals to work together for a harmonious society
In the slum areas of Zhaoqing, China8 has five centers:
Bahkita Center - pre-school, kindergarten, study center, holiday activities
Marco Polo Center - kindergarten, primary 1 and a family clinic
Matteo Ricci School- for primary 2 to 6 children
Mazenod Center - kindergarten
Assisi Center - pre-school, kindergarten
