2007 Diary  -   September, October, November, December

2007-12-26   Dear Friends

Good evening from Marco Polo Center in Zhaoqing.....again wishing everyone a Merry Christmas....and...next week....a Happy New Year!
May we be blessed with good health and safety right through 2008

Beautiful full moons here the past two nights....Christmas Day cloudy but fine....many, many Christmas activities.
Presume you know Christmas is not a holiday here....it's a working/school day....so...many activities were held over the weekend...
(for Guiness Book of Records? - four midnight Masses before 6pm Dec 24!....one last Sat, one last Sun, two Mon afternoon).

Students of our centers had wonderful Christmas parties (photos in next few days DV....no electricity in local area from about 8am to about
7pm...so...photos could not be processed today....which also is why this report is an evening edition).

Many thanks again to HK Lantau "Anon2" for sponsoring Christmas party/meal at Marco Polo (for 200 students/staff/parents)
and  CECI HK   for lovely clothing and gifts for children

AITECE needs more foreign teachers to work in China - see latest newsletter:

Dear Aitece Teacher,

I hope you are taking care as the flu season moves in with the cooler weather.

The visits we made during the past month have ended successfully. Margaret, William and myself appreciate the welcome and help we received from our teachers, and the local foreign affairs offices, as we went around. Margaret had the longest list of places to visit and unfortunately caught a virus along the way. However she was able to complete her schedule and after a few days rest here in Hong Kong was able to return to Australia. She is almost back to normal now and we thank her for all the effort she put into the visit and the attention she gave to all the teachers.

Since then I have attended the annual meeting called by the State Administration for Foreign Experts Affairs. This year it was held in Shenzhen, just across the border. As usual it was part of a four day gathering. The first two days were for the fifty or so Cultural and Education groups, of which we are part. The final two days were spent participating in a major international conference/exhibition of all organizations concerned with introducing foreign experts to China. There must have been over five hundred booths involved. Aitece was also provided with a booth but I’m afraid business was slack as we had very few new teachers to offer for next semester. However I did have visits from some of the members of the foreign affairs offices with which we have close relationships.

Of greatest interest to us was the two hour meeting our groups had with the top officials of the SAFEA office in Beijing. A number of issues were raised with which the officials showed sympathy. One was the age limit: most groups felt that 65 was too early as many foreigner  teachers would be retiring at that age and have much too offer. The officials stated that the 65 limit was ‘in principle’ and there might be exceptions. They also promised to do what they could to improve salary and other conditions in the poorer provinces which suffered in comparison with the richer regions. Mention was made of some discrimination against people who, while have good qualifications and experience, seem to be excluded from jobs because of their nationality or racial background. Again, the officials were aware of this and agreed that there should be no discrimination.

Before the opening ceremony on the third day, I was asked to be one of those personally greeted by the State Leader who presided, Mr Huo Jian Min, Secretary General of the State Council. All the leaders showed great warmth and appreciation for the contribution made by the foreign teachers. One of leaders from SAFEA said that even more important that the English taught was the long-lasting relationships this led to between the teachers and the students, between Chinese and foreigners.

The organization of the meeting was excellent and everything possible was done to ensure the convenience of the delegates.

Some final items: Besides the four prizes for best foreign expert won by our teachers this year, and mentioned in our last newsletter, we learnt that Leslie McNamara also won the Lushan Prize in Jiangxi province. Congratulations, Leslie.

Our representatives in Ireland have set up a website to make Aitece better known: www. aitece.ie We hope it attracts many candidates as the number of new teachers for March 2008 seems to be quite small.

We hope you get a free day for Christmas and have an opportunity to celebrate with other Aitece teachers or your neighbors.

With best wishes from all in Aitece, Hong Kong,

           Hugh, William and Rita

Iona College  Brisbane loyal helper from earliest days 50 years ago, Bob Bonny, went home to Heaven earlier this week.  Sincere sympathy to Shirley and rest of family.  May Bob and all his old mates in Heaven help us daily with their prayers

God bless everyone, especially dear friends local and abroad who are fighting sickness/sadness

2007-11-21  Dear Friends

Good afternoon from under the Australian Gum trees which cover our Marco Polo Center and provide lovely shade.
Only five weeks to Christmas....get the reindeer ready

Photo reports from the past week:

2007-11-14  Volunteers from Zhaoqing Guandong Jin Rong College   - with children at Marco Polo Center

2007-11-16 Happy Birthday Marco Polo teacher Leanne

Same day....no photos....just couldn't bring myself to use camera:  I was on way back to Ricci School after lunch visit to home of new baby in Mok Gong....about to cross highway not far from railway station ...when I came across terrible accident that had happened only five minutes before:  a huge sand truck and a motorcycle had collided.   Nine year old primary three boy (not one of our students) on back of bike was thrown to road and died instantly from massive head injuries...his skull was wide open and his whole brain was on road beside his head.  His father had been taking him to school for start of afternoon session (2.30pm).  Father has broken pelvis and is local San Mao Hospital for a month.
If boy had been wearing a helmet......probably no serious injury.....we are now campaigning for all children to wear helmets...and to hang on...often see tiny un-helmeted children (some not yet three years old) perched on back and not hanging on.  Majority of adults who wear helmets leave them un-strapped

At scene of accident there were dozens of onlookers, but not one helper (..."not the custom"..."best not to get involved"..."too troublesome"....).
Hundreds of cars, trucks, buses, bikes kept passing by, but no one stopped.
Father was (most understandably) weeping and howling in middle of road beside his son's dead body.
I took his hand....rang police (..long time coming...close to 15 minutes..) helped father ring his wife (..his phone not working)...she came...and I had two hands to hold. I got them to hold each others hands to support each other...praying all the time for the Lord to give them courage.

Ambulance came....nurse and ambulance man took one look at body and drove off....all without a word to parents....also not a word from police....after nearly 30 minutes of agony, a truck from crematorium came....body was put in box....man used one hand to pick up brain and put it with body....parents inconsolable.
Eventually kind policeman drove parents and myself to nearby San Mao hospital where after x-rays and sounds tests, father was admitted.
Mother all the time weeping loudly...especially when her sister came.
I phoned HK Ling and she came to hospital to help support the parents.
I'm now visiting father each day....gave him a New Testament the second day to  give him courage.
Huge need for developing China:  paramedics/ counselors for situations like this  + more traffic lights + enforcement of helmet laws + a reversal of present trend - most noticeable in past year - for traffic in Zhaoqing to be more and more  Wild West.
Thank you for prayers for this very sad family.
Should add:  deceased boy has a younger brother, about 3 months old...who DV...will give his parents the will to keep going

Heavy machinery stolen from Australia being used to build Beijing Olympic sites??????  - anyone who has been to China knows that there's more heavy machinery in any one province here than in just about any other country of the world....China doesn't need stolen machinery to do its most important construction work....maybe some stolen goods are  entering the country (...which country doesn't receive stolen goods?)...but to suggest that stolen machinery is needed for or being used on Olympic sites gets a gold medal for imagination.  Bit like saying Sydney Opera House & Harbor Bridge needed/used steel girders stolen from New Zealand

New article (in Italian) re Matteo Ricci's first house in Zhaoqing - by Professor Francesco Maglioccola

China has joined other countries in signing a UN declaration calling for change in Myanmar.
After reading the piece below, I'm praying each day for Myanmar to change quickly:

Prison in Myanmar (Burma) - from "The Heavenly Man" by Yun & Paul Hattaway, p.327ff  ("Book of Year" - "must read")

(In February 2001) I was transferred to the largest prison in Myanmar, in the middle of Yangon (Rangoon) City.
It  houses ten thousand men. No words can adequately describe the conditions there. Many of the prisoners suffered from AIDS, and a large number had leprosy. The smell of rotting flesh invaded every corner of the dark, forsaken facility, where people are left to die in silence

One hundred prisoners were crammed into each cell. It was so tight that no one could sleep on his back. Each man had to sleep head to foot, side by side. We were packed like sardines inside a can. At night, if one prisoner moved too much or coughed uncontrollably, those surrounding him would beat him

I've seen the inside of many prisons, but none came close to matching the terrible living conditions in this place. Yangon is one of the hottest and most humid cities in the world. Every day the temperature was in the mid-to-high 30s Celsius (90s to low 100s Fahrenheit), with 85-90% humidity. We sweated continually in the steaming, putrid air

In the humid, filthy conditions, bacteria and diseases grew and spread quickly. In our cell, one hundred men had to use the same toilet. As a result a horrible plague struck, causing many prisoners to die. Infection entered men's bodies through their backsides and private parts. For several weeks when the plague was at its worst, several prisoners died each night. The disease felt like fire in the stomach. The afflicted would roll around in dire agony before succumbing

I was also infected with the terrible disease at this time, and was unable to digest any solid food for a month. Along with the other prisoners, all I could do was lie down and scratch all day. Parasites were rampant in my body. Sometimes I would look down at my stomach and actually see a worm moving under the surface of my skin. Occasionally its tiny tail could be seen sticking out through the pores of my skin

(Yun was released in September 2001)
